Resume Format for Freshers (Free Word Template + Examples)

Your first resume is hard to write because you don’t have work experience to fill it with. The good news: recruiters hiring freshers don’t expect experience. They look for a clean format, relevant skills, and proof that you can do something useful, like an internship, a project, or a college role.

This guide shows you the right resume format for freshers in India, what to write in each section, mistakes to avoid, and gives you a free editable Word resume template.

The best resume format for freshers

Use a one-page, single-column resume in this order:

  1. Name and contact details
  2. Career objective (2–3 lines)
  3. Education
  4. Skills
  5. Internships and projects
  6. Certifications
  7. Achievements and activities
  8. Languages
  9. Declaration (optional, but common in India)

A single column with plain headings is easiest for both recruiters and the applicant tracking systems (ATS) that many companies use to filter resumes. Fancy two-column designs with icons and photos often get scrambled when an ATS reads them.

What to write in each section

1. Name and contact details

Your name in large text, then city, phone number, a professional email (firstname.lastname@…, not coolboy99@…) and your LinkedIn link. You don’t need your full home address, date of birth, father’s name or a photo unless the employer asks for them.

2. Career objective

Two or three lines saying what role you want and what you bring. Change it for every job type you apply to.

Example: “Recent B.Com graduate with strong Excel and Tally skills, looking for an entry-level accounts executive role where I can support bookkeeping and GST work while growing into a finance professional.”

3. Education

Latest degree first. Include the course, college, university or board, year and your marks or CGPA. Class X and XII are fine for freshers.

4. Skills

Split them into technical skills (Excel, Tally, Python, Canva, AutoCAD, whatever the job needs) and soft skills (communication, teamwork). Only list skills you can actually talk about in an interview.

5. Internships and projects

This is the section that gets you shortlisted. For each one, write 1–3 bullet points that start with an action word and include a number wherever possible:

  • Weak: “Did data entry work.”
  • Strong: “Recorded 300+ purchase and sales vouchers in Tally with zero reconciliation errors.”

No internship? Add your final-year project, a freelance job, a YouTube channel, a college event you organised, or a small website you built.

6. Certifications

Online courses count: Google, Microsoft, NPTEL, Coursera, NSDC or government Skill India courses. Add the issuing body and year.

7. Achievements and activities

Sports, NSS/NCC, college society roles, competitions, volunteering. These show initiative and teamwork when you don’t have job experience.

8 common fresher resume mistakes

  1. Making it two or three pages long. One page is enough.
  2. Using the same resume for every job.
  3. Spelling and grammar mistakes. Read it aloud before sending.
  4. Listing “MS Office” when the job needs Excel specifically. Be precise.
  5. Writing duties instead of results.
  6. Adding hobbies like “listening to music” that say nothing about you.
  7. Sending it as a .docx when the portal asks for PDF. Save as PDF unless told otherwise.
  8. Naming the file “resume final new (2).pdf”. Use Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf.

Frequently asked questions

Should a fresher resume be one page?

Yes. A recruiter spends very little time on each resume when shortlisting, and one focused page is easier to scan.

Should I add a photo to my resume?

Not unless the employer asks for one. Most private companies in India don’t need it, and photos can confuse ATS software.

Is a declaration needed at the end?

It isn’t required, but many Indian employers, especially government and traditional companies, still expect it. It’s safe to keep a one-line declaration.

What is the difference between a CV and a resume?

In India the words are often used for the same thing. Strictly, a resume is a short 1–2 page summary for jobs, while a CV is a longer, detailed record used in academics and research.
